History of the District
Suzak District is a region with a rich historical heritage, having gone through a long path of development over many centuries.
Ancient and Medieval Periods
Suzak District is considered one of the territories with an ancient history. It is located in the Kok-Art valley, and archaeological and ethnographic studies confirm that people have lived here since very early times.
This area was a crossroads of nomadic and other cultures. As a result, a rich layer of historical and cultural heritage has been formed in the Suzak region.
There are several theories regarding the origin of the name “Suzak”:
- “Suu zak” — meaning a wet or water-rich area
- Derived from the words “long water” or “extended water”
- Associated with the medieval tribe “Sozok”
Although there is no single confirmed conclusion, most researchers believe that the name is related to the natural feature of the area — the abundance of water.
17th–19th Centuries (Kokand Khanate Period)
During this period, the Suzak region developed as part of the Fergana Valley. Representatives of Kyrgyz tribes such as Bagysh, Naiman, Kipchak, Teyit and others lived here, gradually transitioning from a nomadic to a settled lifestyle.

- Lands were declared state property
- Russian peasants were resettled
- New settlements were established
During this period, the socio-economic conditions of the local population changed significantly.
Soviet Period (1917–1991)
